Minimum Wage No More Pt. 1

College creates an interesting quandary: living away from your parents while trying to extend yourself socially, while at the same time keeping your head above water academically, all with little or no money.

So how can you maintain your grades and make some dough with out sacrificing anything in class or on the job?

Simple, don't one...

I have personally been working for relatively meager hourly wages since the age of 16: Pizza places, Dry Cleaning and even a stint at a 40-year-old-virgin-esque "We Sell it for you on eBay" store. They were all were very good experiences, but the pay left something to be desired.

I believe the key in college is to use you time as wisely as possible., and an hourly, part-time job may not be the best use of 20 hours a week. Allow me to help you think outside the box of a text book "job".

In the first in a series of articles "Minimum Wage No More: Money at College with out a Paycheck", I am going to be exploring many ways to make some spare money at college, while leaving plenty of time for class, homework, and parting.

The key to any fiscal market is buying low and selling high, and this can be applied to simple examples like craigslist or eBay.

You can easily take a look through the FREE section of craigslist and see if you can pick up anything of potential value for free. This technique best works if you have a car, or dealing with smaller items that are located relatively close. There is little or no monetary risk since the items cost nothing to you. The majority of the items listed in FREE are older and dusty, nothing some light cleaning couldn't fix. Then when its all clean, snap a few pictures and repost the item back on craigslist, preferably for more than what you paid for it.

You can apply the same tactic to eBay. Buying low and selling high. I only suggest tackling products that you are highly familiar with. For instance, I am/used to be a huge collector of sneakers, mostly Nikes; and would be able to pin point deals and rip offs on eBay right away, and was able to "flip" many pairs of shoes for a nice profit.

Both craigslist and eBay have ups and downs when compared to each other. craigslist is free and you can almost always get immediate response to your items, the buyers are local and they usually offer cash. But unlike eBay, where you are able to showcase your item to virtually the whole world, craigslist is limited to a local geographic area. So by limiting your audience, you could be potentially limiting the sale value of your item. But also on the flip side of that, eBay has restructured their fee policy, now charging up front, and after the sale of your item. And add PayPal or other payment fees, and the time it may take for a buyer to get you your money, it may take 3-4 weeks until any cash gets to your pocket.

In the typical minimum wage, young person job, it takes about 12 hours of work to make $50 (factoring taxes and such). And this money is tied in to a set schedule, and you only get a check every two weeks.

While at the same time it could take a person a small fraction of that same to make the same amount of money by flipping any number of items online. No set schedules, no annoying boss, no taxes.

Give me liberty or give me...Yahoo Maps?

Today is one of those rare days where collectively as a nation (or 50% of us that are registered voters, and the about 60% of those people who actually vote, and then 55% of those chose to physically walk in to a polling place and cast a ballot vs. the other 45% of those who mailed in their votes weeks ago via absentee ballot) can participate in a pillar of government that has been apart of this nation (minus slaves, women and the majority of minorities) since its inception over 230 years ago.

Since the passage of the 24th amendment, every college student has had the right to vote, yet it seems very little of us exercise that right. Let today be the day that as a collective body, the young American voter stands up and demand to be taken seriously.

I know, I know. We have all heard the ra-ra speeches from all sides of the aisle, but don't you think its time to actually get off your butt and do something?

In this technologically advanced age, the young would be voter has little to no excuses left for not casting a ballot.

Don't want to fight the election day "crowds"? Vote Absentee!

Don't know where to vote? Check out Vote411's Yahoo maps mash-up. Just scroll down to the bottom and type in your address and see where the nearest polling place it.

Also if you're on a campus, the nearest polling place should be as close as the library or cafeteria.

Phone Home for Free

Want to call grandma on her birthday? Or catch up with an old friend you just rediscovered on Facebook? Or how about phoning home to ask dear ol' Dad for $60 to get you through the end of the month? Well now you can do all this and more for free, using your computer and the internet.

The Voice Over Internet Protocol (or VoIP) revolution has begun, thanks to companies like Vontage and more notably Skype. A few months ago Skype was bought up by eBay. At the time, the acquisition was deemed questionable by many industry "experts". But the partnership has been favorable to users of both internet services.

With its sucess in intagrating Skype calls into eBay, allowing buyers and sellers to talk to each other on neutral ground, Skype annouced that it was making its already popular "Skype Out" service free for all.

Skype Out allows users to dial any number in the world from their computer for free, forever!

All you need is Skype 2.5 and a microphone for your computer (many new laptops have them built in).

Download and install the program and sign in, and you are off and running making free long distance calls right from your desk!

On the flip side, there is nothing more annoying than someone who love to awkwardly extend phone conversations long past their expiration date. Grandma decides to fill you in with every unnecessary details of her recent life (bunions and all), that old Facebook friend seems have gone over the Emo deep end, or Dad blows his lid when you call for the 9th time this semester for him to replenish your beer and pizza money. Well now you can easily get of the phone with out offending the person on the other end of the line.

Sorry gotta go is a collection of fast downloadable mp3 files that you can play to slip out of your phone convo. My favorates include "I can't stop coughing", "Something's wrong with my computer", "The party is starting" and if you live/d in a dorm like my old one "There is a fire drill" should also work like a charm.

Enjoy the Internet just that much more...

The internet kicks major ass as it is, right?

Well allow me to show you how a few simple downloads can enhance your web surfing exponentially.

First download Firefox. Firefox is an open source web browser, which basically means its a program created by the masses. It is fully customizable, which brings us to step two...

The very cool thing about Firefox is it's ability to handle "extensions" or plug-in's.
Here are a few of my favorite...

FoxyTunes - This little add on allows to control popular music players like ITunes, WinAmp, Windows Media Player and tens more, all with in your internet browser.

Map+ - Map+ adds an option in your right-click menu that allows you Yahoo!map any address on any web page.

Forecastfox - This embeds a little 3 day forecast into your browser, powered by Weather.com.

StudioLD's FaceLift Skin - I stumbled on this powerful add on just the other day. It automatically logs you into Facebook (no need to log in every time you go there), allows you to see full profile pics even if you aren't friends with the person (stockerish, I know), Auto-pokes, and enhanced photo-albums (flash enabled, no need to load the page every time you see a new pic).

Video Ook! - This app lets you download any video on Youtube or Google Video to your computer (In a later post I will show you how to import these videos onto your Video Ipod).

and lastly

Greasemonkey - Greasemonkey is basically a developer tool that user Javascript to change the content of a web page, basically it can do alot of cool stuff. After you install Greasemonkey, head over to their Scripts Page and install away. My favorite Script is the Automatic Myspace Media Remover and it does just that. No more automaticly playing Miniplayers, and it closes all embedded YouTube and Google Videos, cleaning up some pages very nicely.

Hope some of this helps you navigate the world wibe web jsut that much better.

Got any other tips of trick? Post a comment or hit me up at kolbygoodman at gmail dot com
